Heartburn is usually a burning sensation in the upper abdomen, the chest, which may involve the throat or sour taste we feel in the mouth to throat. It is usually a symptom of a disease, infection or a condition you are having e.g. Indigestion. It is more common among older people than in younger people, overweight men and women are more at risk of heartburn.
Heartburn can be caused by various reasons but usually by eating habits. Fatty foods, acidic foods and maybe chocolates have been implicated with this symptom and It usually occurs after eating, especially when the food is being rushed.
Lifestyle plays an important role; smokers and alcoholics are more at risk of heartburn. Pregnant women are also at a high risk. It is usually caused by acid reflux back to the gullet from the stomach.
The symptoms of heartburn include: sour taste in the mouth that creeps up the throat, burning sensation in and around the chest, pain in the throat and/or neck, difficulty in swallowing and a coarse cough or sore throat. These symptoms may worsen as we lay or bend over. Symptoms usually show up after meal and are similar to that of indigestion.
Antacids are basically your go to for heartburn relief. Also, baking soda can help with relief from heartburn, but not more than ½ teaspoon is required. Too much use of anti-inflammatory drugs can contribute to heartburn. Heart burn can be a major symptom of Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
If heartburn becomes more persistent, it is advisable to see a doctor for proper diagnosis. Also, symptoms of heartburn resemble symptoms of a heart attack. It is very important to take note of your health issues and tackle every problem with ease.
